Dentistry
At Grant Veterinary Care (GVC), we prioritize your pet's dental health, recommending annual cleanings and surgical extractions if necessary. Before scheduling your pet's general anesthesia-based dental cleaning, consult with our veterinarian to assess your pet's oral condition and periodontal disease. GVC's dental services include preoperative blood work, thorough cleanings (scaling and polishing), intraoral radiographs, surgical extractions if needed as well as post-operative medications. We emphasize home care practices and educate you on signs of oral health problems to ensure your pet's dental well-being. At GVC, we're dedicated to maintaining your pet's healthy smile.

Heartworm
Heartworm is a serious and unfortunately common issue in Hampton Roads, where mosquitoes, active year round, make the region a known "heartworm hotspot." These pests can infect any dog, regardless of breed, and the disease often goes undetected for at least six months while silently damaging the heart and lungs. Treatment is not only expensive, ranging from $1,500 to $3,500, but also very hard on your pet’s health. That’s why prevention is so important.

At GVC, we deeply care about your pets and strongly encourage proactive prevention. While there are several preventative options available, we highly recommend ProHeart 12, a once-a-year injection that eliminates the risk of missed doses. It’s simple, effective, and could save your dog’s life.
Why Laser Therapy?
Laser therapy offers a range of benefits for pets, including pain and inflammation management, enhanced healing, and improved mobility. It can be used to treat various conditions such as arthritis, hip dysplasia, soft tissue injuries, and wounds, and can be a helpful alternative to pain medication.
While there are many applications, at Grant Veterinary Care, our most frequent use for this technology is directly at the incision site to improve healing, post-surgery.
Our brand new, state-of-the-art therapy laser uses 4 wavelengths, each with a specific purpose.
- 650nm: Accelerates Surface Healing
- 810nm: Increases ATP Production
- 915nm: Enhances Oxygen Delivery
- 980nm: Improves Circulation
We are excited to offer this technology to our patients. If you’d like more information on this treatment method or any of the services we offer, please reach out. We’d love to hear from you!
Pyometra
A pyometra is a life-threatening condition where a female pet’s uterus becomes severely infected, often after a heat cycle. It can happen to any intact (not spayed) female dog or cat. There are two types: open pyometra, where discharge is visible, and closed pyometra, where the infection builds inside the uterus with no outward signs. Symptoms may include discharge, vomiting, lethargy, and fever. If not treated quickly, the uterus can rupture, making immediate veterinary intervention critical.
The only effective treatment is an emergency spay surgery, which is typically straightforward for an experienced surgeon if caught early. The best prevention is to spay your pet before their first heat cycle, around five months old, eliminating the risk entirely. If you suspect pyometra or have questions, call us immediately. We often can see your pet the same day and offer significantly lower costs than most emergency hospitals.
BOAS
Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) affects pets with short, "smooshed" faces like French Bulldogs, making it harder for them to breathe compared to dogs with longer noses. These pets often overheat quickly, breathe with their mouths open, tire easily, and may snort or snore. BOAS can be caused by small nostrils (stenotic nares), elongated soft palates, narrow windpipes, large tongues, enlarged tonsils, or tissue near the vocal cords. Unfortunately, symptoms can start as early as 6-10 months, and over time the condition can worsen, sometimes leading to surgical complications if not addressed.
The good news is that corrective laser surgery is routine and highly effective. At our surgical center, we regularly perform these procedures, often alongside spay or neuter surgeries. Pet owners consistently report dramatic improvements in their pet’s breathing, energy levels, and overall quality of life following the surgery. If your pet shows signs of BOAS, give us a call — we’d be excited to help!
